Is CrossFit right for me?
The methodology is simple and effective for most people! We use functional movement, weight training, and cardiovascular conditioning to raise the fitness levels of our athletes in a fun, safe, and virtuous way. No one will be pushed beyond their abilities or capacity, but you can count on us to encourage you to push yourself and support you as you progress.
I'm out of shape.
There aren’t many people out there who don’t think they could be more fit than they are. We have athletes in our CrossFit classes who have 100 pounds to lose. You start where you’re at and build from there. There are ways to modify all movements for all body sizes. We have rowers and bikes to substitute running. We have implements to make pushups work from a standing position, and we know the body. We are happy to help with nutrition plans to help you get a kick weight loss.
I'm not 25 anymore
Our oldest athlete in CrossFit Hood River today is 68. We’ve had 75 year olds. Assuming good health, age is simply not an issue. If there are movements like getting up and down off the floor that you’d prefer to refrain from, we have many modifications for every movement of every workout. Our workouts of the day are simply a baseline that we build from to make each person’s workout safe, effective, and challenging.
We’ve trained people in boots, slings, scooters and crutches. We’ve worked with disabled veterans and amputees. There are always body parts that can still be worked. Workouts can be modified to be all seated if you have a leg/knee/ankle injury, or moved to kneeling if that makes sense. If you have a shoulder or arm injury we can focus on legs.
Now you may prefer private coaching if you have an acute injury or need specific rehabilitative work. But, if you are hoping to simply keep your exercise up, around a specific issue, there is a good chance that you and your coach can come up with a plan. Please have doctor approval before joining any exercise program and contact us to discuss before jumping in.
We know that the name CrossFit proceeds CrossFit Hood River. People draw ideas on what this program is from the CrossFit Games, from other people they meet, from other gyms. No two gyms are the same and we consider ourselves to be very unique. We love the sport of CrossFit and the healthy competition that pushes us to get better every day. Our focus here is to support the lifestyle of the everyday folks who want to keep up with their kids, feel good on their bikes, get more ride time on the mountain and the windsurfer. Our focus is on the daily workouts that keep us feeling (and looking) great!
I'm not motivated
You may have found a place that can motivate you. Our community is strong and connected. We support each other, and if you want an accountability partner, we guarantee you can find one within our walls.
I don't want to get big
This program isn’t one where you’d accidentally change sizes dramatically, aside from toning and building some lean mass while also losing excess body fat. In order to start really building large muscles, you’d have to make that your project. We can help you with that, but it will involve a lot of weight training and supplementation, it won’t happen overnight and it certainly won’t happen if you’re not setting that as your goal!
I don't want to get small!
Some guys feel like the conditioning (cardio) aspects of this program might push them into burning through muscle mass. We don’t see that happen very often as we may be doing a lot of conditioning, our average conditioning portion is from 8-15 minutes long and builds conditioning through strength based movements such as kettlebell swings, wall balls, and weightlifting. Don’t worry bro, we’ll protect your gainz.
The HARDEST PART, and I mean, the absolutely hardest part… Is walking through the door. Once you are in here, you will find a community, a fitness family so to speak that you’ve probably never experienced before. Pushing yourself is a little scary, and the first couple weeks you will feel sore, but it won’t take long (probably the first day!) before you can’t wait til it’s time for your next workout.
I have a crazy schedule.
We offer classes as early as 6am and as late as 5:30 pm. We have a lunch offering, a mid-morning, and two classes on Saturdays. When the studio doesn’t have a class going, you are welcome to use it as Open Gym and run through the workout with other CrossFitters or on your own. The gym hours are 5am to 9pm on weekdays and 8am to 6pm on weekends! If none of these hours work with your schedule, please get in touch with us to discuss other options such as private or small group training.
I am not coachable
This is the place where we may stop explaining how this program works for everyone and that you have no excuses to join us. We only want people who have a good attitude and can check their egos at the door. Our coaches are here to help you get better at stuff, keep you safe, give you feedback, and stop you if you’re doing something that may hurt you or someone else. This is the baseline for all of our classes. If this isn’t something that you feel comfortable with, we would recommend that you try personal training or simply open gym workouts in our main gym.
Getting Started & Class Times
Getting started with CrossFit Hood River is easy! Come to a class, and arrive ten minutes early. Your coach should be available to say hi and check in with you on any questions or concerns you may have. Our programming in each class is designed to work for people who are new to the program as well as the folks that have been around for years. We look forward to meeting you!
